My group and I have been invited to spend the night, modern Zulu-style, at their home in the KwaZulu-Natal province. From my seat on the couch, I can see out the living room window to the green terraces dotted with Zulu houses. They all seem to cling precariously to the earth, as if one rumble would send them sliding. In front of each house is a collection of kids, chickens, goats and cows.

So many cows. It makes sense, considering the Zulu people still adhere to the tradition of dowry. When a young woman is engaged to be married, her hand is exchanged with the blessing of her father and the payment of a cow or two. Or three, depending on her status in the community. The idea of checking marital bed sheets for blood or worshipping a king with six wives and 27 children seems otherworldly. Today young boys and girls still learn the Ingoma dance, one of the purest remains of Zulu tradition.

Khanyo comes from a line of strong women. Mama reminds me of the traditional healer I met earlier that day. A group of us had gathered inside her rondavel hut to listen to stories of ancestral spirits, giant pythons and coca-cola diabetes cures. We sat in a semi-circle surrounded by beads, herbs and the skulls of mysterious animals while a translator helped her answer our questions.

For many people, the Zulu are the best-known African people. Their military exploits led to the rise of a great kingdom that was feared for a long time over much of the African continent. They have a royal line that can be traced back to Shaka, the king of the Zulu during the 19th century. Shaka built his kingdom from small tribes that resided in what is today the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The Zulu are the descendants of Nguni-speaking people. Their written history can be traced back to the 14th century, when they migrated southward from the east to settle in what is now South Africa. Archaeological excavations on early Iron Age sites indicate that people ancestral to the Nguni-speaking peoples of KwaZulu were settled there from about At that time, all the Nguni tribes of the area were autonomous; however, some were more powerful than others.

In the early 19th century a young prince, Shaka, from the Zulu tribe came onto the scene and welded most of the Nguni tribes into the powerful Zulu Kingdom. Shaka ruled from until he was assassinated by his brothers in During his reign, Shaka recruited young men from all over the kingdom and trained them in his own novel warrior tactics.

Parenting in South American and African Contexts. Parenting requires interpersonal skills and makes emotional demands Santrock, According to Santrock, most parents learn parenting practices from their own parents – some they accept and some they discard. The author argues that when parenting methods are passed on from one generation to the next, both desirable and undesirable practices are perpetuated. These practices may be cultural values which have been passed on from one parent to another.

Culture on the other hand is a way of life of a group of people- the behaviours, symbols, values, beliefs that people accept, not really thinking about them and are passed by mostly communication and imitation from one generation to another. With regards to African culture, people perceive most of its practices as something which is devilish in the sense that a lot of its practices are attributed to gods. Some people especially Africans, who have not fully experienced the indigenous culture believe that to be too culturally aware makes one backward and or ancient.
